On Monday, June 6, the Warwick City Council — led by a small group of members — advanced a resolution to the General Assembly opposing / seeking to amend the proposed Assault Weapons Ban.
Our community is deeply divided on this issue, and the Rhode Island State Legislature is the appropriate venue for such a complex and important debate. Local government should remain focused on its core responsibilities — like passing responsible budgets, repairing roads, funding our schools, and keeping our neighborhoods safe — not diving into polarizing statewide matters.
While the resolution has now passed by a narrow 6-3 vote, it’s important to hold our elected officials accountable for the priorities they choose to champion.
