Hi neighbors,
Here’s a recap of what the City Council took up at the September 14 meeting:
Aldrich Middle School
Residents of the surrounding area raised concerns about the future of the Aldrich building ā demolition vs. rehabilitation, overdevelopment, traffic, and neighborhood impact. The Council’s next step is to issue a request for bids to reuse the existing structure. If that doesn’t produce a viable option, Planning will bring back a proposal that allows for demolition.
Public Safety Investments
The Council approved a new pumper truck (replacing a 17-year-old unit) and a new ambulance. Ambulance calls remain extremely high-volume citywide.
School Committee Reform
A proposal to restructure the School Committee’s membership and election districts was tabled as premature. There’s general agreement between the Committee and Council that some reform is warranted, but more work is needed to determine scope and rationale.
Apponaug Circulator Apartments
Preliminary approval was granted for a new apartment building on the north side of the Apponaug Circulator.
2027 Meeting Calendar
The Council’s 2027 meeting schedule was set and adopted.
Other Approved Purchases
– A brine-based pre-treatment system for winter roads (~$150K) ā more efficient than granulated salt, with expected labor and material savings
– A chassis truck wash station to extend the life of municipal vehicles
– The 2027 recycling calendar
– Opioid settlement funds directed to fund an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for Warwick Public Schools, reducing pressure on the school department’s budget
Best,
Vinny Gebhart
Ward 9 City Councilman
